Dance showcase in Dorset set to change the way dance is shared across the UK

Pavilion Dance South West (PDSW) has been awarded £673, 900 through the Arts Council’s Ambition for Excellence fund to deliver an ambitious project that will develop the way dance is showcased and attract new audiences to dance from across the country and beyond.

The three year project, Surf the Wave, will see PDSW working with national partners to create a step change in the way that dance is shared on a local, regional and national basis. The project will champion diversity in dance and will focus on taking dance outside of its usual contexts, like major cities, and into more unusual settings, such as outdoor spaces and festivals.

Zannah Doan, Chief Executive of PDSW, said: " Surf The Wave has been a long time in the planning. It presents a significant collaborative opportunity for the UK dance sector to curate a national showcase that is rooted in artist and promoter support and relationships. We are proud to be leading it and to be putting Bournemouth and Poole firmly on the dance map."

Developing talent, supporting artists and connecting with dance promoters is at the heart of the project. PDSW will work closely with the National Dance Network to achieve these aims. They have also received support from trusts and foundations such as Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and Jerwood Charitable Foundation, who recognise the significance of this project.

In Spring 2019, Bournemouth and Poole will be home to a brand new national dance event that will bring together artists and promoters from across the UK. This event will showcase the best dance practice from across the country.

Phil Gibby, Director South West, Arts Council England said:  “PDSW is a fantastic dance development organisation. We invest in PDSW through our National Portfolio and now we are delighted to be able to support them through our Ambition for Excellence fund which will strengthen their national profile. The ambitions of the Surf the Wave project have the potential to have a real sector-shaping impact, we look forward to seeing how the project develops the future of dance in England and the showcasing event in 2019.”
