Environment and Society name change

Chatham House’s Energy Environment and Resources Programme is changing its name to the ‘Environment and Society Programme’.

The Energy, Environment and Resources Programme at international think tank Chatham House is changing its name to the ‘Environment and Society Programme’.  The new title reflects the centrality of environmental sustainability to healthy and thriving societies as well as to stable international relations. 

Biodiversity on land and in the oceans are as important to humanity’s future as access to sustainable sources of energy and raw materials. 

The Environment and Society Programme will conduct research, convene policy dialogues, and offer new ideas on how people and communities can best adapt to, mitigate and overcome the effects of climate change, biodiversity loss and natural resource depletion upon societal wellbeing and geopolitics.  

The launch of the Environment and Society Programme and the evolution of the Hoffmann Centre into the Sustainability Accelerator are part of an institute-wide move to deliver on Chatham House’s mission to help build a sustainably secure, prosperous and just world.

The new title represents the mission of the Institute to support governments and societies with evidence-based information and practical tools to become sustainable.

The Environment and Society Programme explores the linkages between environmental issues and the well-being of societies.
