UK CMO commentary on screen time and social media map of reviews

techUK comments on the release of the UK CMO’s review into screen use and children’s mental health.

Commenting on the release of the UK CMO’s review into screen use and children’s mental health, Antony Walker, deputy CEO, techUK yesterday said:

“techUK welcomes the CMO’s review of the evidence on screen use and children’s mental health. Technology is a force for good in society and can help children develop their creativity, independence and social networks; however, we have to remain vigilant to the risk of online harms and this is an area where continued research is required.

“techUK agrees with the CMO that while there is no causal link between screen use and negative mental health, technology companies, parents and government should be alert to challenges that can be found online. Our members are working with DCMS and the Department for Health on this.

“techUK endorses the CMO’s advice to parents on screen use for their families which supports the recently published guidance from the Royal College of Paediatrics. Moreover, techUK as an executive Board Member of the UK Council for Internet Safety agrees with the CMO’s recommendations that a health minister and clinicians should join the Board to strengthen our evidence-based approach.”
