Device Security for Local Government - Why Now?

An increasingly challenging landscape ahead for Local Authorities…
Device Security, why now?
- Current awareness of risks and costs associated with next generation cyber security threats
- Requirement to adhere to new and more complex standards in compliance and regulation
- Explosive growth of IoT increasing unknowns and vulnerabilities in the form of unmanaged devices
- Cyber criminals expanding reach to exploit social behaviour as a means of gaining unauthorised access
The Problem
The number of unmanaged, IoT and OT devices connected, will exceed 20+ Billion by 2020, providing hackers with a much larger attack surface. Despite this, it is universally recognised that at any given time, up to 24% of connected devices still go undetected.
The Challenges
Approximately three quarters of local authorities have been victim to cyber attacks in the last 12 months with some reporting multiple attacks. With large volumes of personal data being held, government departments are faced with being continually targeted by hackers seeking to exploit blind spots caused by siloed security systems. The main concerns are around loss of sensitive data, financial impact and disruption to front line services.
