Evaluation of Digital Technology in Prisons

This study, released 16 July 2020, reports on an evaluation of introducing new digital technology into prisons in England and Wales.

You will have seen techUK's latest communication regarding the forming of a new working group – Driving Digital Transformation Across the Criminal Justice System and, with this, we are happy to pass on the below information with regards to the latest report released evaluating digital technology in prisons.

In the last decade, Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service has invested in installing technology widely in prisons in England and Wales. These technologies include : in-cell telephony, whereby PIN telephones are installed in prison cells; self-service kiosks on wing landings for prisoners to complete admin tasks that were previously completed through a paper-based system; in-cell laptop and mobile phones for prison staff so that they can access the Prison-National Offender Management Information System (P-NOMIS).

This report focuses on the impact of the technology on:

  • the communication of knowledge within prisons
  • prisoner wellbeing and confidence using IT
  • prisoner relationships inside and outside prison
  • prison violence
  • staff job satisfaction and workload.
