UK Telecoms Supply Chain Review report published
The review investigates the evolution of 5G and Full Fibre Networks, along with the security and economic risks to UK telecoms supply arrangements.
The Telecoms Supply Chain Review, announced in October 2018, aim to establish an evidence-based policy framework for the telecoms supply chain, taking account of the security, quality of services, economic and strategic factors.
DCMS has published the findings from the review of the supply arrangements for the UK telecoms Critical National Infrastructure (CNI).
The review seeks to address three key questions:
- How should we incentivise telecoms operators to improve security standards and practices in 5G and full fibre networks?
- How should we address the security challenges posed by vendors?
- How can we create sustainable diversity in the telecoms supply chain?
The Review specifically focused on telecoms CNI supporting public telecommunications networks and services and explored the infrastructure, equipment and part of the network critical to 5G and full fibre networks.
In response to the Review’s findings, DCMS will create a new framework for the UK telecoms sector, which will be a significant change from the current model. The new framework is essential to protect the UK’s national security interest and will continue to build existing capabilities. It will also provide clarity to industry, along with providing the flexibility and powers for the Government to respond appropriately as risks, threats and technology change.
The new security framework will have three key components:
- New Telecoms Security Requirements (TSR)
- Establishing an enhanced legislative framework for security in telecoms
- Managing the security risks posed by suppliers
techUK look forward to engaging with Government on the Review and ensure the new framework for the telecommunications industry is essential for 5G and full fibre technologies.
